Gears: Form Over Function?
When you are a tinkerer, and a lifelong one at that you have a tendency to take things apart and put them together in the back of your mind and I guess I can say it's always been a little game just looking at something I've never seen before and trying to figure out what it does and how it works.
That's where some of the accepted aesthetics and often controversial opinions come into play with Steampunk. We've all heard someone say “Just glue on some gears and call it steampunk.”, and that came from what I would assume is well meaning, albeit coarse observation.
I don't disagree with that sentiment. There's a lot of things that have been made by people that I would consider cool looking but when it comes down to ticking all of the boxes for me eventually I land in the section where actual function comes into play. I wouldn't call it distaste or disgust, but it is disappointment nonetheless.
It's just an opinion, but it is mine. Still I can congratulate someone on their efforts and would never seek to discourage anyone because yes, even though some of this stuff wouldn’t or could never work mechanically or serve any purpose other than the visual, it still looks pretty damn cool. I just find myself wanting, and needing more with my own projects.
Consider this just a exercise in accepting the visual and subverting the function long enough to appreciate it. There's still some really cool ideas in here is what I'm trying to convey.
